What is a database?

• A database is a collection of data that is organized so that its contents can easily be accessed, managed and updated.
• A database is a collection of information stored in a computer in a systematic way, such that a computer program can consult it to answer questions.
• A database is an organized collection of information records that can be accessed electronically. In the Library this includes indexing and abstracting databases, citation databases or databases of full-text journal articles.

What Software can we use to make a database?

• Microsoft Access, Apple – Filemaker Pro Database, Oracle ...

In this assignment, students will learn to use Apple database software. After this project they will know how to store information in a database and view, sort, and retrieve the information in various ways.

1. Learn to create a personal information database containing last name, first name, age, address, vocation, favorite color, car, etc.

Use this data to create a database. For each person, you will find first and last name, age, address, city, state, zip, sport, vocation, favorite color, and car driven. When this data is entered, you will be using it to prepare and format database reports.

• Design a new layout of the database information. Use just the name and address fields as well as car and color (10 fields in all). Include a clip art image in this layout. Email this with a header that includes your name, the data and the title: Car and Color.
• Find all records where the age is between 20 and 30. Sort just these records by last name and age, with the youngest first, and create a new layout which will display only: last name, first name, and age. Email me this with a header that includes your name, the date and the title: Last Name and Age.

2. Design a music record database of your own or based on the data given to you, containing the following information: Title, Last Name, First Name, Rating, Category, Format, Cost, Year and Note, etc. At least 10 data entries. See the Data. See the detail.
