OBJECTIVES:

Chinese I is a year-long course.   No prior knowledge of Chinese is required. The purpose of this course is to develop students' basic communicative skills and knowledge of the Chinese language and Chinese culture.   In this course, students will learn the vocabulary, grammar, sentences and expressions that can be applied to the elementary conversational topics. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:    

  • To understand the Chinese language system: pinying and characters.
  • To develop the basic communicative skills.
  • To know the vocabulary, grammar, sentences and expressions necessary to communicate in Chinese.
  • To read and write basic Chinese characters.
  • To understand the Chinese culture.
  • To interact with the Chinese people in different fields.

METHODOLOGY:

Course work is part lecture and demonstration by the teacher, part hands-on practice and part group activity.  All course materials such as syllabus, audio and video, homework, projects and other online resources are posted on Chinese Podcast to reinforce class lecture and discussion. Back to Top

COURSE EVALUATION:

Students will be evaluated on the completion of assignments, homework, minor projects, major projects, quizzes and exams on a standards basis. Evaluation is done through a rubric so that students can evaluate themselves for strengths and areas of opportunity for improvement. Every consideration will be given to an individual's reading, writing and communicative skills as well as differences in aesthetics in order to make grading based on the actual process. Rubrics are published for each project and quiz. The standards are as follows;

Distinguished: (A+, A, A-) This is reserved for the student who has gone above and beyond with is fundamentally expected. The level of work is far beyond the standard level of proficiency.

Advanced: (B+, B, B-) These grades are given for exemplary work. The quality of the student's work and learning is expected to be at a level beyond the standard of proficiency.

Proficient: (C+, C, C-) These grades represent what all students should be able to know and do after completion of class. The student has met the learning requirements for the class and should be proficient in this knowledge.

Novice: This grade represents an emerging level of meeting the learning expectations of the class. This means that the student has made sufficient progress toward meeting the class expectations.

No Credit: This grade signifies that there are major gaps in this student's learning. The student does not get credit for the class.Back to Top
