OBJECTIVES:

Chinese II is a year-long course.   Prior knowledge of Chinese I is required. The purpose of this course is to develop students' communicative skills and knowledge of the Chinese language and Chinese culture.   In this course, students will learn the vocabulary, grammar, sentences and expressions that can be applied to the advanced conversational topics. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:    

  • To completely understand the Chinese language system: pinying and characters.
  • To develop the advanced communicative skills.
  • To know the vocabulary, grammar, sentences and expressions necessary to communicate in Chinese.
  • To read and write advanced-level Chinese characters.
  • To understand the Chinese culture very well.
  • To interact with the Chinese people in different fields.

METHODOLOGY:

This is a hybrid virtual learning class, which consists of online components and face-to-face time with students. All course materials such as syllabus, course requirements, lesson plans, audio and video clips, homework, projects, quizzes, exams, and other online resources are posted on Chinese Podcast. There is a scheduled Day I, Block 4 for the students in Chinese II to meet with the teacher and get individual help. Back to Top

COURSE EVALUATION:

Students will be evaluated on the completion of assignments, homework, minor projects, major projects, quizzes and exams on a standards basis. Evaluation is done through a rubric so that students can evaluate themselves for strengths and areas of opportunity for improvement. Every consideration will be given to an individual's reading, writing and communicative skills as well as differences in aesthetics in order to make grading based on the actual process. Rubrics are published for each project and quiz. The standards are as follows;

Distinguished: (A+, A, A-) This is reserved for the student who has gone above and beyond with is fundamentally expected. The level of work is far beyond the standard level of proficiency.

Advanced: (B+, B, B-) These grades are given for exemplary work. The quality of the student's work and learning is expected to be at a level beyond the standard of proficiency.

Proficient: (C+, C, C-) These grades represent what all students should be able to know and do after completion of class. The student has met the learning requirements for the class and should be proficient in this knowledge.

Novice: This grade represents an emerging level of meeting the learning expectations of the class. This means that the student has made sufficient progress toward meeting the class expectations.

No Credit: This grade signifies that there are major gaps in this student's learning. The student does not get credit for the class.Back to Top
